Unlike many of his peers,
TOM GLOVER of Rowayton hasn’t even begun to think about retirement. “How can you retire when you’ve never really been to work?” quips Glover, who at seventy-something is still traveling the world doing what he loves best: drawing caricatures. It is a talent he has employed professionally since 1980, when Sports Illustrated hired him to draw likenesses of the magazine’s guests at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. Since then he has been hired, mostly by major corporations as well as by professional and college sports teams, to draw caricatures of people attending a tournament or gala or even a company-sponsered trip. These drawings are turned into posters that become treasured souvenirs. |
In a style uniquely his own, it takes Glover only about two minutes to capture an individual’s physical and personality characteristics on paper. Each sketch is completely hand drawn. “Nothing is computer-generated,” says Glover, who admits that he doesn’t even have a website. “I’ve never even advertised --it’s all been by word of mouth.” And what a wonderful career it has been. Glover and his wife, Diane, figure they’ve been around the world several times. It also has allowed him to indulge in his second-favorite pastime -- playing lots and lots of golf. “We’ve been very, very fortunate,”agrees Diane. |
